The 80s was unfortunately left with the indelible stigma of being known for churning out songs that were nothing more than frivolous, syrupy, sweet pop. In my mind, this bad rap was solely based on the reason that these tunes happened to be cursed with an infectious, upbeat tempo. Maybe so, but that doesn't mean they were void of deep lyrics and powerful stories. Case in point, these 5 classics:
99 red balloons (Nena): This song is about 99 red balloons flying through the air that 2 military super powers mistake as a surprise attack. As a result, both countries retaliate causing a worldwide apocalypse.
Come on Eileen (Dexy’s Midnight Runners): The story of an innocent, childhood friendship that slowly transforms into an everlasting love.
Kyrie (Mr. Mister): The true phrase is Kyrie Eleison. It refers to a Catholic Mass that originated from an ancient Greek text. The direct translation is Lord Have Mercy.
Little Red Corvette (Prince): Deals with the lasting, damaging effects a one night stand can have on an individual.
Safety Dance (Men Without Hats): The song serves as a protest to the governments of the world that believe it is a necessary evil to be in command of an arsenal of nuclear weapons. Essentially, leaders feel that this satanic stockpile should make citizens feel safer because of mutual assured destruction.
