3 TYPES OF TERMITES THAT WILL EAT THE CRAP OUT OF YOUR HOME.

by Nameless Dad (NWM Staff Writer)

Buying a house in this economic climate is crazy enough with all the financial hoops you have jump through. Not to mention all the inspections you need to have done to see if your dream pad is up to code. Case in point, I have a good friend who just bought a house. Everything went through fine when it came to the buying part. Smooth sailing. Of course once he moved in that was a different story. He discovered the one thing every homeowner dreads – termites. An infestation like that can cost you ridiculous amounts of money in foundation damage. Here are the 3 usual suspects you need to be on the lookout for...

DRYWOOD TERMITES:

  • Most common of the bunch.
  • Usually camp out within your walls to fill their nasty bellies with wood.
  • Takes 3 to 5 years before the swarm can cause any real damage.
  • Dust and tiny droppings signal their presence.

GROUND TERMITES:

  • Most destructive termite.
  • Can eat up to 10 pound of wood in a week.
  • Since their nests are in the ground they need to tunnel into the house to get food for the queen.
  • Mud tubes are their tell tale sign.

FORMOSAN TERMITES:

  • An Asian breed that's gradually becoming more common in the US.
  • Their nests could be underground or in walls.
  • Can consume up to 13 ounces of wood a day
  • Mud tubes, shed wings and damaged wood are all signs you’ve got a problem of the Formosan kind.
