Sure studios could blow budgets by using millions of dollars to create those Avatar-ish CGI effects. Though in my opinion, if you want to secure some box office bucks for a film – toss in a diseased rodent (or two thousand). You simple can’t go wrong. There is just something about red-eyed vermin all twitching and scurrying that gets me. I challenge anyone to name a film with a diseased rat that wasn’t a hit. Here’s my proof.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE (1962):
Scene: Psycho Jane (Bette Davis) brings an ailing Blanche (Joan Crawford) her special lunch.
Praise: Earned Ms. Davis an Oscar nomination.

INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989):
Scene: Elsa and Indy are swimming in underground tunnels (under the streets of Venice) searching for a special engraving on a casket. Unfortunately they find a sea of rats that they eventually set ablaze.

# Of Rats: Lucasfilms used approx. 5000 real rats on set. 1000 mechanical rats were used for the fire scene.

WILLARD (1971):
Synopsis: A tortured soul named Willard befriends a rat named Socrates and hundreds of his friends (including a giant, pushy rat named Ben.)
Praise: Film nominated for an Edgar Award in 1972
