MAN, PEOPLE REALLY DO HATE THE CRAP OUT OF SCRAPPY-DOO!

Scrappy-Doo was added to the Scooby-Doo cast in 1979.  Apparently the show was at a ratings low point. So the ABC suits thought a new character might draw in viewers. Surprisingly this “puppy power!” actually helped…at least back in the day. Though as we all know, Scrappy eventually became one of the most hated characters in Hanna-Barbera history. And sadly this rage has yet to die down. Check out these comments I found on the net.

NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER IMMORTALIZED IN CHIA.

In the '80s Joseph Enterprises' ingenious scientists created the very first plant, kitschy collectible hybrid – The Chia Pet. Thanks to a mind-numbing jingle “Chi, Chi, Chia,” this plant pet was catapulted to super-brand stardom. Over the years the Chia Pet’s family has grown to include not just the original ram, but also a herd of other animals and even an alarm clock. Recently Chia has expanded to the licensed arena offering characters from Looney Toons, Hanna Barbera and the Simpsons.

Sadly, even a lovable “as seen on TV” product isn’t above controversy. In April of 2009 they released Chia Obama. Soon after, stores like Walgreens pulled it from their shelves. They claimed that the CO could be construed as racist. Still Chia Pet has weathered the storm and will survive to grow a new batch of characters. Chia Cheney?

RUH-ROH

by Tom McConville (NWM Staff Writer)

Being at home has given me the opportunity to check out a ton of cartoons. And the one that my two older kids are really into is Scooby Doo. THE ORIGINAL SCOOBY DOO! The Boomerang Network shows all the old episodes every afternoon. And certain things I remember still ring true. Scooby and Shaggy were indeed the precursors to Cheech and Chong, the sexual tension between Freddie and Daphne was on constant simmer, and Velma was undoubtedly first lesbian in an animated series. But the great thing is, those meddling kids still hold up after all these years.

What bums me out, however, is that Boomerang also shows a movie entitled...

‘Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School” featuring the most loathsome of all cartoon characters – a one Scrappy Doo.

Who though the addition of Scrappy Doo was a smart idea? The same people who thought the Miranda character on Sex and the City was good?  Scrappy was supposed to be a likable Dane.

Bad job Hanna. F minus Barbera.

SCOOBY’S ALL STAR LAFF-A-LYMPICS OFFICIAL RESULTS!

Building on the Battle of The Network Stars fever of the late 70s, ABC green lighted Laff-A-Lympics. A groundbreaking animated series that featured 45 of the Hanna-Barbera staples competing in all types of Olympic competitions. Announcing duties went to the always witty Snagglepuss and Mildew Wolf. The cartoon aired from 1977-78. Sadly it ended without an official medal ceremony or at least letting us know the final scores. Thankfully Wikipedia did go through all the episodes and collected the results from every event. Here’s the official tally as of October 28, 1978…

The Scooby Doobies: 14 wins

The Yogi Yahooeys: 7 wins

The Really Rottens: 2 wins
