BLOGS THAT USE WORD VERIFICATION ARE SLOWLY KILLING US (and I have the numbers to prove it)

Every now and then I like to do a PSA on this troublesome issue that still plagues the blogosphere. If I can convert just one of you WVers then I’ve done my job. Hopefully my numbers will do just that. But first…

4 MEH FACTS ABOUT WV:

1-The official tech term is CAPTCHA (pronounced/ˈkæptʃə/):

2-Stands for…Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart

3-It was created in the year 2000 by a team of scientists at Carnegie Mellon.

4-CAPTCHA's main usage is to protect sites from the onslaught of automated spam.

SO HOW IS WORD VERIFICATION A SILENT KILLER?

Here are my staggering stats

Average time it takes it takes to use Word Verification = 5 sec.

Average # of blogs a blogging-person reads per day = 20

Total time spent Verifying per day = 1 min 40 sec.

- per week = 11 min. 6 sec.

-  per month = 44 min. 24 sec.

- per year = 9 hours 40 min. 8sec.

- per life (80 yrs.) = 32 days 2 hours 10 minutes 6 seconds

BOTTOM LINE: By using Word Verification you are stealing a little over 1 month from each of our lives. Time we could spend with our loved ones, exercising, creating stuff – essentially living life.

HERE'S HOW TO END WV:

AND HERE’S HOW TO SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF SOMEBODY THIS HALLOWEEN.

  2. YES. For fucks sake, anyone that hasn't already needs to turn it off.

  3. Already on this and promoting this as well. Most of the blogs I visit are on top of this, but I'd say 1/5 still have this active.

  4. I HATE word verification more than anything. We should unleash the toilet monster on everyone who uses it.

  5. I gotta get me one of those toilet monsters. Reminds me of the movie "Ghoulies".

  6. Turned it off the day after joining Blogger, I think.

  7. That's funny. I never realized that. I admit, I've been blogging 3 years with the setup my son (who designed the original site) placed there. I never thought I had an option to opt out of word verification. Thanks.

  12. I got rid of my word verification recently and instead just moderate the comments before I allow them to be posted. It makes more sense, and it's less annoying. Good points you made!

  18. My Lord, that toilet monster is hilarious! And I took my word verification off :) However should I begin to get a lot of crap, I will turn it back on! Haha

  19. I think the Captcha is annoying, especially when numbers and caps are involved but I only added mine recently after I went through some comments on older blogs and it was miles of spam.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Really dislike the word verification. It would help if Blogger did not automatically check "Yes" for it. New bloggers don't know how to turn it off.

  21. good information hopefully everybody with captchas follows it

  22. You and I are in wild agreement on this one. Turned mine of a good year ago. And always irritated by how many bloggers still have the @!@#$ thing on...

  27. You are hilarious!! I turn it on ONLY during Captcha Balderdash, but I'm starting to think I will be done with that silly game. You don't get it anyway. You made some excellent points up above, Copyboy. You need to be given a more job responsibilities now. You need to be...hmmm...Runthemeetingboy or Kissmyfeetiownthisplaceboy. Let's think about changing that up, hmmm?

  38. Some captchas are actually helping us digitally archive books. There is an interesting video on TED.com that explains how this annoying function will actually benefit everyone in the long run.
