GUESS THE FOOT FUNGUS.

I cause skin to crack, flake and peel between the toes. If not treated the affected area will become red and itchy. In more severe cases I can cause puss-oozing blisters that will appear all over the heels.

What am I?

Answer: Tinea pedis (aka Athlete’s Foot)

Treatment: The infection can easily be controlled with over the counter antifungal creams, powders or sprays like Tinactin®.

OH, OH, OH, TO TOUCH AND FEEL VIRGIN GIRLS’ VAGINAS AND HYMENS.

Any sane person would read that headline and think I’m the creepiest, most deranged blogger who totally deserves a court mandated ankle bracelet. I’d have to say you’d probably be right in most cases – except this one. In fact any first year med student could back me up. The line is actually a VERY helpful mnemonic. And yes, I totally forgot what the 18pt Scrabble word meant as well. It took me a wiki, yahoo answers and a google dictionary post just to jog my memory again. A MNEMONIC is a phrase you memorize in order to aid you in memory recall. Probably the most famous one is … Every Good Boy Does Fine. This is a classic mnemonic for the music scale (E,G, B, D, F). Now back to the virgins and hymens. That line is used to help recall all of the (wait for it) CRANIAL NERVES.

I-Olfactory nerve

II-Optic nerve

III-Oculomotor nerve

IV-Trochlear nerve

V-Trigeminal nerve

VI-Abducens nerve

VII-Facial nerve

VIII-Vestibulocochlear nerve/Auditory nerve

IX-Glossopharyngeal nerve

X-Vagus nerve

XI-Accessory nerve/Spinal accessory nerve

XII-Hypoglossal nerve.

FYI…here are some cleaner mnemonic phrases to help you memorize the C-nerves –

On Old Olympus' Towering Top A Finely Vested German Viewed A Hawk

On Old Olympus' Towering Top A Finn And German Viewed Some Hops

Oh, Oh, Oh, They Traveled And Found Voldemort Guarding Very Secret Hallows

But be honest (court mandated ankle bracelet aside), which line would help you best retain this medical jargon? Harry Potter or porn?

WE CAN CLONE SHEEP, HELP ERECTIONS, MAKE PHONES SMART, BUT STILL NOTHING FOR PIZZA BURN.

by One Hungry Jew (NWM Staff Writer)

I fell victim yesterday. Happened approximately at 12:43pm. The culprit? A large pepperoni and sausage pizza (sorry Kosher fanbase) that was piping hot from the pizza oven. All it took was one bite for the inevitable to happen, PIZZA BURN! I totally scorched the tip of my tongue and the roof of my mouth. The thing that pisses me off the most is I even did the obligatory blow right before it happened. Did squat to help.

NO CURE FOR PB, BUT THERE IS HOPE.

The one thing that sucks about this affliction is not just the discomfort, but it stops you from enjoying food for UP TO 7 to 10 days. So sayeth the knowledgeable forum folks lurking on google. Fortunately I did find 3 ways to alleviate the pain and possibly help speed up the healing process. Courtesy of Mothernature.com

GARGLE SALT WATER: One 1/2 teaspoon of table salt should do the trick. Rinse every hour or so until you feel the pain subside.

COLD MILK: Drinking it helps coat the lesion. Unfortunately you’d have to chug a lot of the white stuff to make any sort of difference.

DRUGS: Specifically ORABASE. An ointment (in gel form) that helps sooth mouth burns.

WITHOUT A DOUBT MY MOTHER-IN-LAW IS WRONG 92.8% OF THE TIME.

by Nameless Dad (NWM Staff Writer)

Just hosted a nice long family get together over the weekend – specifically my wife’s parents. Oh joy! Honestly I do love ‘em both. It’s just that at times my mother-in-law can get a smidge overbearingly intrusive. And NOT that I’m keeping score (‘cause my wife would kill me), she’s like wrong 92.8% of the time. Here are 3 examples of her wise anti-advice from the weekend.

M-LAW: Don’t let your kids run outside in the cold! They have wet hair!! You’ll see, they’ll all get sick!!

FALSE: Wet hair in the cold air does NOT cause colds. The virus germ is the main culprit here. It’s WAY more prevalent in the winter months. Not to mention that the body is more susceptible to catching viruses in cold, dry air.

M-LAW: Phil and I swear off spicy foods. It causes ulcers!

FALSE: Spicy foods may cause ulcers to flare up or become irritated. However, there has been no medical documentation that says spicy foods do in fact cause ulcers.

M-LAW: You know why your youngest wears glasses? You don’t feed her enough carrots.

½ FALSE: True carrots are chock full of Beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A and then uses to nourish the retina area. However, NO correlation has been established between the lack of carrots in your diet and needing glasses.

VALUABLE INTERNET FORUM ADVICE: USE KRAZY GLUE AND MAXI PADS.

by Nameless Dad (NWM Staff Writer)

I usually take to the forums when I’m looking for honest opinions about movies, games and porn. When it comes to medical advice, it’s probably best to be more cautious. Case in point, my wife just got a deep cut while washing a food processor blade. We were wondering how to stop it from bleeding and this is the advice (word for word) from internet forums we found…

Crazy as it sounds, Krazy glue works great, hockey players use it and they are back on the ice for the next shift.

Loosely bandage the area, just to help keep debris out, avoid cotton wool if you can. it will stick to the area. Non stick pads if you have them. Maxi pads or diapers if you dont- those are clean and safe to use as bandages and wont stick.

All you have to do is put a pinch of cayenne pepper in your cut or whatever is bleeding and it will stop almost immediately

I have the ultimate remedy in stopping bleeding.. My neighbor is from Guatemala. She's a very elderly lady. Her husband is a bleeder. It doesn’t take much to get him bleeding. She cuts a piece of his hair, burns it with a lighter, then places it on the bleeding area holding it with her fingers. Bleeding stops almost immediately.
