HOW DOES ONE EAT DOG IN SOUTH KOREA?

Thanks to most country laws, eating the ultimate hot dog is pretty much frowned upon. That being said you can still somewhat enjoy this delicacy in South Korea. However, they breed a dog that’s made for eating (not petting). The most popular of the dog dishes is Boshintang (보신탕; 補身湯) aka spicy stew. This dish is only enjoyed in the summer months (something to do with balancing human body heat).
Other than dog, Boshintang is chock full of other delicious ingredients including … green onion, perilla leaves, and dropwort, and spices such as Doenjang (된장), Gochujang (고추장), and perilla seed powder. Bon Appetit!

  1. That is just plain gross. Hot dog is my limit. Even the jokes about cat in Chinese food is gross. haha

  2. That is effing disgusting and the fact that doggy meat is a seasonal staple over in SK makes me even more glad to be a vegetarian. However, I'm not opposed to a certain kind of weiner ...just saying... ; )

  3. they're so cute you could just eat them up! ^_^

    oh wait...

I don't see why people have such a stigma about eating dog. I've never had it, but if I found it tasted good I probably wouldn't be all that opposed to it. For me it's all how they treat the animal while it's alive and killing it humanely.

  4. I say we start cooking Koreans into stews and see how that goes down.

  5. Lovely, Though I think the dish is particularly nasty. I know some people who have eaten it and loved it. We view dogs as pets not as food and that is why us Westerners shy away from it. In other countries their meat is what we consider pets. To each their own and if you add a little hot sauce you can't taste the grainy texture...lol

  11. I still don't get what makes people think dogs are better than cows. We should eat'em all people.

  13. This falls under the category of Things I Didn't Need to Know.
I am curious though to know how many North Americans try the dish just so they can say they ate dog.

  14. I wouldn't eat dog, but Gochujang is very delicious though. There's this Korean place near where I used to live that I visited at least once a week. I miss that place.

Thankfully they didn't serve dog there :D.

  15. Ironically, I posted about eating dog today, too. However, yours looks more... tasty? And I feel terrible for saying that. It's the detox talking. I'm about 70% sure.

  16. I'm opposed to torturing dogs but if I happen to be in SK and someone offers me a bite, I'm not gonna refuse. It's not every day you get to eat a dog. And NOT eating isn't going to bring it back...
