JEWS FOR JESUS FISH

Well actually one Jew…me. Not sure how the fish and Jesus got together. I assume it’s mentioned in one of the books of the New Testament. Maybe it's got something to do with Judas? Mary Magdalene? Or possibly that other apostle with the long beard? Whatever it is, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s truly a bitchin’ piece of work. I just like the simplistic linear, yet powerful aura it evokes. As far as what my fave JF is, well that changes every day. Like right now I really fancy the JESUS FISH - 3rd Third Brake Light Vinyl Decal Mask Kit (pictured above) for only $9.99 @ Amazon. Basically you slap it on your brake light. And anytime you stop, the heathens behind you will experience this divine design in action. Way more eco-friendly than a burning bush.

  2. Well here's the low down. Back in the time of the Pharisees when it was dangerous to speak of such scandalous things a person would make half of the picture in the dirt with their toe. If you were speaking with a believer they would draw the other half, if not they'd have no idea what you had drawn. If they completed the pic then you were safe to speak openly.

  4. Or it could be the super fantastic story of the fishes and the loaves...and the fish symbol is way cooler than a loaf symbol!

  5. The fish became an early marker of Christianity because of Christ's remark that he would make his disciples "fishers of men."

The purpose of it was protection as the bipolar diva said.

  9. I like my Jesus fish all nice and quiet, like in the catacombs. This one is so lit up---you'd get radiation.

  12. ok, that is hysterical!

By the way, I'm pretty sure the reason the fish was used as a symbol (the other answers about identifying other followers are right, but don't necessarily explain why the fish per se) is because in Greek (I think), Jesus' name started with an I as does the word for fish (Icthos, I think, but my spelling is probably all wrong).

Again, I know my half answers are totally lame, but I think the Jewish tradition is that using the same later of a name "remembers" the person (like, you could name a child after a grandparent just by having their name start with the same letter, not actually exactly the same name). So that same first letter is the link on fish and Jesus (hmm - totally shouldn't have explained the translation... I'm changing my answer and just saying it's because Jesus and fish totally start with the same letter. how do you not see that? ;))

  13. Oooh, I knew a thing!

Allow me to enlighten you (with the help of Wikipedia):

Ichthys (ΙCH"THUS, Greek for fish) can be read as an acrostic, a word formed from the first letters of several words. It compiles to "Jesus Christ, God's son, savior," in ancient Greek "Ἰησοῦς Χριστός, Θεοῦ ͑Υιός, Σωτήρ", Iēsous Christos, Theou Huios, Sōtēr.
