Every now and then I like to do a PSA on this troublesome issue that still plagues the blogosphere. If I can convert just one of you WVers then I’ve done my job. Hopefully my numbers will do just that. But first…
4 MEH FACTS ABOUT WV:
2-Stands for…Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart
3-It was created in the year 2000 by a team of scientists at Carnegie Mellon.
4-CAPTCHA's main usage is to protect sites from the onslaught of automated spam.
SO HOW IS WORD VERIFICATION A SILENT KILLER?
Here are my staggering stats …
Average time it takes it takes to use Word Verification = 5 sec.
Average # of blogs a blogging-person reads per day = 20
Total time spent Verifying per day = 1 min 40 sec.
- per week = 11 min. 6 sec.
- per month = 44 min. 24 sec.
- per year = 9 hours 40 min. 8sec.
- per life (80 yrs.) = 32 days 2 hours 10 minutes 6 seconds
BOTTOM LINE: By using Word Verification you are stealing a little over 1 month from each of our lives. Time we could spend with our loved ones, exercising, creating stuff – essentially living life.
HERE'S HOW TO END WV:
AND HERE’S HOW TO SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF SOMEBODY THIS HALLOWEEN.
The Toilet Monster fits onto most T-seats and costs only $14.99 @ TheNoveltyHut.com
You converted me long ago. Nice toilet monster. lol
ReplyDeleteYES. For fucks sake, anyone that hasn't already needs to turn it off.
ReplyDeleteAlready on this and promoting this as well. Most of the blogs I visit are on top of this, but I'd say 1/5 still have this active.
ReplyDeleteI HATE word verification more than anything. We should unleash the toilet monster on everyone who uses it.
ReplyDeleteI gotta get me one of those toilet monsters. Reminds me of the movie "Ghoulies".
ReplyDeleteTurned it off the day after joining Blogger, I think.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny. I never realized that. I admit, I've been blogging 3 years with the setup my son (who designed the original site) placed there. I never thought I had an option to opt out of word verification. Thanks.
ReplyDeletei'm thinking of stopping supporting these blogs.
ReplyDeletehahaha a silent killer, hahaha. I turned off since I started my blog, I hate Word Verification, some words are very distorted X_X
ReplyDeleteA friggin' men to that!
ReplyDeleteI'm so tired of these things. The wear me out and make me want take codine...
i agree. it takes forever to verify and the worst part is that sometimes the letters look like numbers and/or like other letters that it makes u say f- it i'm done
ReplyDeleteI got rid of my word verification recently and instead just moderate the comments before I allow them to be posted. It makes more sense, and it's less annoying. Good points you made!
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree. Hate word ver. Love the stats!!
ReplyDeletefullowin 'n' suppin :)
ReplyDeletewtfiniggagun
Frick yeah! Thank you! What's even worse is when you hav eto it on multiple comments for contest entries!!! Enough already!
ReplyDeleteLife Music Laughter
I hate those freaking things, sucking up my time
ReplyDeleteAnd since it depends on how the comment box appears, the average can be about five minutes per hour of blogging or more.
ReplyDeleteMy Lord, that toilet monster is hilarious! And I took my word verification off :) However should I begin to get a lot of crap, I will turn it back on! Haha
ReplyDeleteI think the Captcha is annoying, especially when numbers and caps are involved but I only added mine recently after I went through some comments on older blogs and it was miles of spam.
ReplyDeleteReally dislike the word verification. It would help if Blogger did not automatically check "Yes" for it. New bloggers don't know how to turn it off.
ReplyDeletegood information hopefully everybody with captchas follows it
ReplyDeleteYou and I are in wild agreement on this one. Turned mine of a good year ago. And always irritated by how many bloggers still have the @!@#$ thing on...
ReplyDeletePearl
haha I LOVE this!!! I took captcha off of my blog long ago. It is soooo annoying!!!
ReplyDeleteThanx for the PSA, Someone needed to say it. :D
ReplyDeleteTurning that crap off was the first thing I did on my blog, even before the first post.
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing us all a favor with this post, and for the pronounciation of captcha.
ReplyDeleteLook at you -- OVER 400 followers!! How/when?!! You are amazing! xo
You are hilarious!! I turn it on ONLY during Captcha Balderdash, but I'm starting to think I will be done with that silly game. You don't get it anyway. You made some excellent points up above, Copyboy. You need to be given a more job responsibilities now. You need to be...hmmm...Runthemeetingboy or Kissmyfeetiownthisplaceboy. Let's think about changing that up, hmmm?
ReplyDeleteI hate that word verification! Have you ever noticed that sometimes it seems they're giving you a message too? Creepy AND annoying!
ReplyDeleteI HATE CAPTCHAS!!
ReplyDeletetoo bad you couldn't turn word verification on for just this post.
ReplyDeleteCAPTCHA will be the doom of us all!
ReplyDeletethe first time i saw your picture i left lol. captcha's piss me off
ReplyDeleteI also hate word verification. Personally deleting unwanted messages is not that big a deal for me....worth the effort on my part.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
i agree completely death to the captcha!!!
ReplyDeleteI already disabled my captcha
ReplyDeleteIt was annoying!
I never had that damned thing on.. I mean for crissakes, it's not like this stuff is Top Secret. I guess it makes the lamer bloggers feel muy importante>>
ReplyDeleteOh my word, I was JUST complaining about this to my hubby two minutes ago, while I'm trying to get all my commenting done!!! I laughed when I saw your post!
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!!!!
Your toilet dude is hilarious, too. I think I should get one of those. Problem is, it will likely scare the bejeezies out of someone and they'll doo doo all over my floor!
haha I like it. good call. I removed mine a while back because it's annoying.
ReplyDeleteSome captchas are actually helping us digitally archive books. There is an interesting video on TED.com that explains how this annoying function will actually benefit everyone in the long run.
ReplyDeletethat's right I hate captcha
ReplyDeleteFixed my wagon a long time ago. Found out too many people can't even spell the word they are looking at. Getting me a toilet monster for sure! 'Cept I'm putting in the washing machine, heh, heh, heh.
ReplyDeleteThеre's definately a great deal to find out about this topic. I love all of the points you have made.
