So the other day I was thinking about orgasms and why the French call it Le Petite Mort, or the little death. If I’m understanding the French correctly, that means orgasms are shortening our life-spans. Thankfully I found a few medical journals that shed some light on this whole “sex of death" thing. As it turns out, scientists are actually linking more orgasms to longevity. Studies have shown that both men and woman who have “regular orgasms” live longer than their non orgasmic counterparts. Which lead me to question, why would the French call something so great Le Petit Mort? Turns out it’s just a metaphor for the transcendent like state achieved during orgasm. We are not dying, but what’s happening is sure a lot better than plain old everyday life.
Viva la France, with just a smidge of death.
