The penny costs more to make than it's worth and doesn't pull its weight as a currency. So says the NY Times. The penny accounts for about 58% of the coins circulating but only contributes about 8% of the value. The quarter is a better deal, accounting for about 57% of all coin value. Because the penny is such a losing proposition, the mint has been producing fewer and fewer in recent years. No word on the fate of the Disney dollar.
