ARE BEACHES READY FOR $17,000 THONGS?

Pretty soon (if not now) half the world will be encased in snow and ice. Which means folks will be heading in droves to warmer pastures. The Islands. Mexico. Pleasant Pines Retirement Community in Boca Raton, Fla.

One of the most popular packing items for theses lands of ever-sunny beaches (second only to the bathing suit) are flip-flops. Rewind 20 years and these simple sandles were basically 5 bucks a pop and came in maybe 2 colors. Today, it has joined the ranks of uber-fancy footwear. 4 cases in point…


H. Stern (women): Designed this pair back in ’04. Features a whopping 1,500 gold feathers and is accented with diamonds. Only one pair was produced which sold in 2009 for a price tag of $17,000.


Prada (Women): Comes in peonia (pink), platino (gold), or nero (black) leather. Features a rubber sole and a big honkin’ Prada logo. Also comes with a matching travel case. Cost: $195.


Panarea /Ferragamo (Men/Women): Crafted from Caffe leather; tonal topstitching. Embossed signature logo. "Panarea" is made in Italy. Cost: $375.



Havaianas (Women): Classic design with a slim mesh finish accented with crystals. Cost: $198.
