I PRESENT TO YOU THE ONLY EXAMPLE OF GOOD RACISM.

I am not a raging bigot by any stretch of the imagination. I live in a blue state. I’m a Jewish democrat.  And I like all types of music…including Country. Though recently I did find one blemish on my near perfect “can’t we all just get along” record. I call it RESTAURANT RACISM. Though I gotta be honest here, I really don’t consider this ideology a character flaw.

SO WHAT IS RESTAURANT RACISM?
The belief that an eatery serving ethnic cuisine can only be considered good if people of that same ethnicity dine in that establishment

REAL WORLD EXAMPLE:
You’re walking down the street and spot a brand new Chinese restaurant. You’re hungry, but are not sure you wanna give it a try. However you do notice that there are a fair number of Asian Americans customers. Upon seeing this you don’t even bother reading the menu or googling the review on your iPhone. If Asian Americans are eating the food it has to be good.

WHY IS THIS GOOD RACISM?
You are making a flattering assumption about an entire race – Asian Americans will only eat good Chinese food.

WHY IS THIS BAD RACISM?
You are making a blind assumption about an entire race of people –  All Asian Americans have the ability to identify really good Chinese food.

So is this theory good, bad, or just taking valuable time away from you playing Snood?

  1. Interesting, it just goes to prove that everybody sees race. you didn't see people eating there, you saw "asian american" people eating there. some more examples of racism on the positive, but still racism: blacks are athletic, asians are smart, women are motherly, etc... We all come from different backgrounds and we all see things differently, so we just have to look past our initial stereotypical opinion and make judements for ourselves.

  2. hahaha this is so true! There's a mandarin place nearby that is really popular, and white folks love it because it's always filled with Asian folks.

  3. I don't see how that could be considered racist. After all, I only eat at restaurants with names like "Mike's" if Mikes eat there. The average Joe just wouldn't know a Mike's from a Bob's.

  5. what is snood? The only thing I look for is if a place is really crowed or full of country people. But that's just me.

  7. Wow some really good insight here. The only problem is I can't tell how many Asian people are in line for a restaurant when I phone in my order. I need spies.

  8. I am now going to start profiling my eateries instead of just looking for any ol' place to chow. Thanks for the tip!

Ya know just going to Furrs Cafeteria to eat because all the population over 250 lbs (male and female) eats there just might blow your theory.

  9. Funny, my racism says, "If Jews like the Chinese food joint, it's gotta be good." Why? Because folks of the Jewish persuasion probably consume more Chinese food than Asian-Americans. Ha ha. Just kidding, sorta.

As an Italian-American, his is true. We would never purchase pizza from Dominos or any other crap-ass chain. We seek out good delis and authentic-tasting Italian. Very good point. Funny, I thought this post was going to be about ethnic food made by different ethnicities. Like how in NYC most of the Mexican food is made by Asians and most of the Italian foods in NJ are made by people from Mexico.

  11. This reminds me of my idea for restaurant chains based on dispelling racism. For example, I will open a place called Steve's, and we will only serve Chinese food. Its sister restaurant will be Luigi's, which will serve Mexican. Oh, you thought it would be Italian? Well, then you're racist.

  12. The truth of the matter is...
Except for Asian restaurants, almost all food in this country (in cities) is cooked by hispanics, usually Mexicans. I didn't say all, I said most. If you think I'm wrong, just ask your waiter...

    Los mexicanos son excelentes cocineras!

  13. haha, there is all sorts of restaurant racism.

I have totally thought that before about a local mexican place I love... but then I figured it could just be their family or friends... and then I figured that was kind of racist to assume that they are all related.... darn it... I can't win.

  14. I am not sure if it is good or bad but sound advice when looking at a ethnic restaurant to try out for the first time.

  15. Frankly, I don't care who is in there....if I like the food, I'm goin' in. (And there isn't too much food I don't like.)
