In 1986, Ditka’s Chicago Bears were crowned Super Bowl champs, and perhaps the greatest team of all time. They certainly proved it on the field. One could also make a case that this legendary status was due in part to the super success of their rap video – THE SUPER BOWL SHUFFLE.
Best performances are from Singletary (Samurai Mike) and Jim “no rhythm” McMahon.
Of course like anything else in Super Bowl land, when one team does some sort of trash talking there always is a rebuttal. In this case it was the New England Patriots (pre-Brady ‘n Belichick).
Sadly New England kinda came up short in this area, recording a very forgettable “THE PATRIOTS AND WE (me).” I remember seeing their video for the first time on Mtv's Friday Night Video Fights (Super Bowl edition). For anyone under 33 not familiar with the show, Mtv would simply have two videos go head to head. The winner would be decided by phone in fan votes.
Similar to the final outcome of the game, the Bears shuffled over the Patriots. Personally, I like the Patriot's song/video for 5 reasons:
- Has a catchy, 80s pop beat.
- Has everyday city-folks doing goofy stuff for the camera (like the Bangles “Walk Like An Egyptian” video).
- Cool 80s hair and fashion sense.
- Features an 80s sax solo.
- Robert Urich cameo.
SUPER BOWL SHUFFLE FACTS:
- Peaked at #41 on the Billboard charts.
- Earned a grammy nomination for best group R&B performance.
- Profits from song went to charity.
- Follow up "Stay in School Shuffle," tanked commercially.
BONUS: My pick for best sports team song of all time (a bit biased I know)...
Never heard even heard of that before. Yikes...
ReplyDeleteLMAO! Never knew that the Patsies had a rebuttal song for the Bears' shuffle song. It's so 80s!
