Today is the first day approximately 45 million Americans (including myself) are going to spend 1 to 2 billion bucks on diet programs, foods and books. Sure you can register with top legitimate ones like Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers. OR be like me and dive into the wondrous world of fad dieting. Here is just a sample of your buffet of choices.
CABBAGE SOUP DIET: This is a 7 day plan aimed at shedding maximum poundage. As you can guess 90% of your menu for the week will be cabbage soup. Be prepared for lots of gas. Also kinda lacking on the nutrition front. Click here for the menu or lack thereof.
TAPEWORM DIET: Think tequila worm shot, minus the tequila. Still offered in some places south of our border. Essentially you swallow the worm which then absorbs all of your nutrients (vital and garbage.) Scientists say you can lose up to 2 lbs a week. Then when you’re happy with results just kill the worm with an antibiotic. Negatives: you’re playing host to a living breathing parasite.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR DIET: A 1950s doctor from Vermont (Doc D.C. Jarvis) can take credit for this one. Pretty much all centers around drinking this tonic made from fermenting apple juice with generous helpings of yeast, sugar and a smidge of bacteria.
ATKINS: The granddaddy of all the fads. By now more than half the country has done the zero carbs thing. Doc A’s Diet Revolution book has sold over 15 million copies and counting.
I tried Atkins for about a week once. Felt sick the whole time. My favorite fad diet though has got to be the cookie diet. Never tried it, just looks too stupid.
